What is olive oil coffee

Olive oil coffee is a rich and flavorful drink that combines two ingredients that people love and use everyday. Learn how to make this delicious drink why adding you should add olive oil to your coffee.

What is Oleato

The moment Starbucks announced their new drink, Oleato, our inbox and DMs began to overflow. Oleato means 'with oil' in Italian. And it sounds like the perfect way to describe this drink.

The drink allegedly came to life when Starbucks founder, Howard Schultz, traveled to southern Italy and began taking a spoonful of extra virgin olive oil in addition to his coffee each morning. He then wanted to see if he could combine the two.

Is olive oil coffee like bulletproof

Yes, it's very similar to bulletproof coffee, a beverage that combines butter with our favorite morning drink. In fact, this might be the perfect version of bulletproof coffee for folks that are vegan or looking to stay away from animal fat.

We personally think olive oil coffee has more depth and blends together better because oil is already liquid and emulsifies extremely well.

Can you taste the oil

Yes, you can definitely taste the EVOO and it's delicious! It's not too much or overpowering which is a concern for a lot of people. The fact that the product is blended or emulsified with the milk, which also has some fat, creates a really beautiful foamy texture.

Can I use another type of oil

You should definitely use a premium EVOO like the EXAU Lina. Extra virgin olive oils are the highest quality oils available to consumers. In addition they lend incredible depth to both foods and beverages. An antioxidant rich oil can pack a ton of flavor and even a little bit of spice, which blends beautifully with the foam in this drink.

Can you use other types of milk to make olive oil coffee

Absolutely, we used cow milk because that's what we drink at home. However, this creamy drink would work really well with oat milk or almond milk.

What are the health benefits of olive oil coffee

EVOO has what appears to be a never ending list of health benefits. According to research olive oil:

  • helps with memory and brain function
  • lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease
  • helps to regulate blood sugar
  • lowers the risk of Alzheimer's disease
  • is packed with antioxidants
  • lowers the risk of heart disease
  • helps to lower cholesterol
  • aids indigestion

How to make olive oil coffee

Brew your coffee as you usually would. We use this Delonghi espresso machine every day. It's the best coffee maker/machine we've owned thus far. But we had this Delonghi for 8 years which was a really good and reliable machine. And we also still use and love this classic six cup moka. If you're into espresso we like this coffee.

Add the sugar to the drink while it's still hot and stir until dissolved. If you prefer syrups you can add them now.

This most important part of making this coffee is getting the milk and oil to emulsify, which is actually pretty easy to do since milk has a decent fat content.

Foam the milk as you usually would. If you have a handheld milk foamer you can add the olive oil to the milk and foam them together to create a cream. We don't have a detached foamer so we pour the coffee and the foamed milk into a small blender and blend on low. This works incredibly well and the entire drinks foams up very nicely. Plus the olive oil doesn't separate!
